Princess Imperial is a title given to the eldest daughter of the Brazilian Emperor. The title was created by Emperor Pedro II of Brazil in 1822. The first Princess Imperial was his eldest daughter, Isabel, who went on to become Brazil's last ruler before it became a republic. The title of Princess Imperial was used until the Brazilian monarchy was overthrown in a coup in 1889. Today, there are no official Princesses Imperial in Brazil. Nonetheless, the descendants of the royal family, which is still active, continue to use the titles of Prince and Princess as a sign of respect.
